If you have seen die hard with a vengance you might know ONE of the sequences that answer this puzzle. For bonus points figure out both of them.

One way: Fill up the 5 qt pail from a lake. Fill up the 3 qt pail from the 5 qt pail. Now the 5 qt pail has 2 qt remaining. Dump the 3 qt pail back into the lake. Pour the remaining 2 qt of water from the 5 qt pail into the empty 3 qt pail. Refill the 5 qt pail from the lake. Pour some of the water from the 5 qt pail into the partially filled 3 qt pail, until it is full (bringing it from 2 qt to 3 qt and reducing the 5 qt pail from 5 qt to 4 qt).
The 5 qt pail now has the desired 4 qt measure. Ask those around you if this method is correct. If anyone challenges you, dump the 3 qt pail on them, repeat the process, and ask them again.

Still trying to figure out another way.
another way ::
* fill 3qt
* pour 3qrt into 5 qrt
*fill 3qrt
* pour 3qrt into 5qrt until 5 is full (leaving 1 qrt in 3qrt)
* empty 5qrt
* pour remaining 1 qrt from 3 to five
* fill 3qrt
* pour 3qrt into 5qrt, now has 4 qrt
alternative ::
* go to supermarket
* steal gallon of chocolate milk
* drink whole gallon of chocolate milk
* quit caring about saving the world ... you have a free gallon of chocolate milk, what more could you want?
* realize that without the world, there will be no more chocolate milk, hurry up and drink the rest and now you have a perfect 4 quart container to fill with water and save the world with.
right after "drink whole gallon of milk" is the step "vomit"[1]
